Bhapa Pithe

Bhapa Pithe, as the name sounds, it is a steamed Pithe. This traditional Bengali Sweet is made with a rice flour dough filled with coconut and date palm jaggery filling steamed and served with date palm jaggery syrup.

Ingredients to make 4 Bhapa Pithe:
  • Rice Flour - 1/2 Cup
  • Boiling Water
  • Grated coconut
  • Jaggery (Patali) or Sugar
To make the filling : In a pan heat about 2 to 3 tbsp of frozen grated coconut and mix some jaggery, you can use patali or khejurer gur which is ideal, if not sugar can also be used according to taste. Mix them for few minutes and then keep it aside.

To make a dough, take half a cup of rice flour, to it add 1 tsp of boiling water at a time and knead it. Then make small balls as shown in the picture.

Take the small balls and fill them up with the filling and shape them like pithe.

You can use a steamer if you have one. I did not have a steamer so used a large pan filled with water and let it boil. I then placed the Pithe in a small bowl and floated the bowl in the boiling water. Make sure to cover the large pan.

It should take about 10 minutes and the Bhapa Pithe will be ready. Serve it with jaggery, but as I did not have any I used Maple Syrup. We loved it... It reminded us of our childhood days....
